The Big Island produces the bulk of Hawaii's beef, so you have to make time to stop at a burger joint or two between your trips to the beach, waterfalls, and volcanoes. Big Island beef is top quality, as most local ranchers raise grass-fed cattle, which is leaner and healthier than mainland grain-fed beef. Here’s a list of our favorite spots to indulge in a delicious, juicy burger. Aloha!

We have cross-checked our picks with top sites, like Frommer’s, Hawai’i Magazine, and Trip Advisor, to make sure we're offering the best burger for you to enjoy on Big Island.

Cronies is the perfect place to catch a game while enjoying a tasty burger and a couple of beers. Located in downtown Hilo, this sports bar has several burgers on the menu — including a loco moco burger — and a wide selection of beers on tap. Try to save a little room for one of their homemade desserts.

Open Wednesday through Monday from 11 am to 8 pm. On Tuesday they close at 3 pm.

This popular burger joint was originally an Irish bar. Nowadays, Hilo Burger Joint serves local beef burgers to accompany your beer of choice. If you’re a burger connoisseur, you will enjoy the many options available — try the au jus burger if you like it saucy, or the “Lava Burger” if you prefer it spicy. If you’re in Hilo on your birthday, be sure to stop here because you’ll get a free burger!

Open Monday through Saturday from 11am to 9 pm and Sunday from 7 am to 9 pm.

The menu here includes burgers cooked over lava rocks.  The “PB&B Burger” features peanut butter and bacon, and the ”MacNut Pesto Goat Cheeseburger” is served with a side of fresh pineapple coleslaw. Whatever you choose, get ready, because there’s some serious flavor that’s about to be on your plate. This is no mainland burger joint!

Open Thursday through Tuesday from 11:30 am to 8 pm.  Closed on Wednesday.

61-3665 Akoni Pule Highway, Waimea  (808) 880-1923 Ext. 1

The motto of Kohala Burger and Taco is “Small Place, Big Taste,” and it’s a great place to stop if you’re on the northwest coast of the island. Hawaiian grass-fed beef on freshly baked bread alongside cold milkshakes makes for a delightful lunch. Part of the menu is dedicated specifically to bacon burgers.

Check their website for operating hours, they are subject to change, but generally, they are open Monday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. Closed Sunday.

64-957 Mamalahoa Hwy, Waimea (808) 885-6268

The Fish and The Hog has a smoker and a grill, so we’re not talking just regular burgers here, we’re talking about smokehouse brisket burgers in addition to the juicy classic styles.  The bar's serving fresh cocktails from local tropical fruits.  They've got two separate dining rooms for you to enjoy their delicious food and homemade desserts.

Hours are Thursday through Monday from 11:30 am to 8:30 pm.  Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

The focus here is on locally sourced ingredients. Ultimate Burger uses only local grass-fed beef and organic local vegetables, and their french fries are freshly cut on the daily. Optional burger toppings include avocado, pineapple, pickled jalapeño, and applewood smoked bacon. If you’re traveling with an herbivore, “No Moo? No Problem!” there are veggie options on the menu.

Open Monday through Thursday from 10:30 am to 8 pm and Friday through Sunday from

10:30 am to 8:30 pm.
